A Circular Walk from Little Scotland to Haigh
For the March walk we met at our lunch venue, The Goose and Gander Restaurant, Little Scotland. Very kindly they allowed us to use their car park.
Fortunately by the time we started it had stopped drizzling with the expectation of improving weather throughout the morning. From the car park we headed down the road in the direction of Haigh. Reaching the last houses on the Bolton/Wigan border we turned right at the footpath sign into the fields. Following the marked path we travelled through a number of fields heading west towards Fir Tree Farm. On the way a few of the stiles we crossed were in need of some attention.
At the farm we joined Pennington Lane walking towards School Lane. Halfway along the lane is Pennington Farm. At School Lane we turned left by the houses and followed the road into the grounds of Haigh Hall by Red Rock Lodge. Here we stopped for our group photo. Passing through the car park we stopped for our coffee break in the Kitchen Courtyard. Recently refurbished this now has a very nice outside seating area as well as a number of cafes and shops.
Fully refreshed we re-joined School Lane in the direction of the Church of St. David, Haigh. Taking the access road at the side of the church and, passing by the cemetery, we continued along the wooded track. At the end we turned right walking through the Woodlands Trust area to Manor Grove. Following Holly Road we crossed Haigh Road and continued through the housing estate. The sun was now starting to make an appearance. Reaching Stanley Road we turned right and then onto Stanley Lane. Just before we got to Toddington Farm we climbed over the stile following the track down through the fields towards Borsdane Brook. After crossing the brook we headed west through the fields finally reaching Copperas Lane. At the end of the lane we turned right onto the main road and back to The Goose and Gander. David and Dilys
