A Circular Walk from Blackrod to Worthington Lakes
For this month’s walk we met at our lunch venue, The Goose & Gander Restaurant, Little Scotland. They very kindly allowed us to use their car park.
As this is August we were very pleased to see the turnout of 22. The weather forecast for this morning was for cloudy but dry conditions. Would the forecast be right?
From the car park we headed off down Blundell Lane passing the Tree Barn. At the junction of Arley Lane we turned right towards Aberdeen Farm. Continuing past the farm we joined the ‘Rotary Way’ (the old railway line) walking towards the A6. At the end of the ‘Way’ we followed the path down to, and crossed the footbridge over, the River Douglas. Immediately turning left we walked under the canal bridge and, turning right went up the steps to the canal.
We then followed the towpath to Bridge No 66 just before Sharrocks Farm. Leaving the canal we took the path down to, and crossed over, the River Douglas via the footbridge. At the top of the lane by the ‘ Hudora Pet Hotel’ we turned right along Common End heading towards the farm and ‘new’ bungalows. Here the weather let us down and it started to rain.
After the last building we forked right following the marked trail through the fields to Worthington Lakes where we stopped for our coffee break and to admire the views. Refreshed, we walked in an anti-clockwise direction around the lakes. Despite the dry spell we have had, the reservoirs were not too low.
We left the lake using the signposted path through the woods towards Wigan Golf Club. Emerging from the woods we followed the path running between a couple of the playing greens keeping an eye out for low flying golf balls. Passing by the club house on our left we came to Arley Lane, crossed the bridge over the canal and walked along the lane, re-joining Blundell Lane and back to The Goose and Gander for a well-earned lunch.
